| Is My Wireless Network Secure? |
|
This question comes up alot and it can be a tough issue.
First you must ask yourself how much protection do you need? Higher levels of encryption and security will make it harder to break in to your network but will also be more complicated to setup. If your wireless network is secured in (WEP) Wired Equivalent Privacy you are sadly sitting in a false sense of security. WEP encryption can be cracked by an hacker in less than 5 minutes. Please note that this is the default setting for most wireless networks even if they support WPA. Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will set this up because of its simplicity and ease of installation and not for security. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA or WPA2) with AES(CCMP) cipher should be your number one choice for protecting your wireless network (preferably WPA2) even if you are just a regular home network. It is recommended that you enable MAC Address filtering and to not use a PSK (Preshared Key) as this is the biggest security weakness of WPA. Instead if your hardware supports it use (WPS) Wifi Protected Setup Or a randomly generated Hex key. If you decide to go with a PSK make sure not to use your phone number or anything that could be associated with your residence. Instead use proper password security techniques, Include capitols and lower case as well as numbers and letters.
